List of D.I.Y ways to make rooms feel bigger

Howdy again,

Here is a list of tips that will help you create the illusion of space in your home and also give you some valuable interior decorating ideas to think about.

My top space creation tips include:

Mirrors - Mirrors help to bounce light around a room and create the illusion of space. Cheap mirrors are almost everywhere these days. I stopped by a small euro shop in Gort, Co.Galway and found two small mirrors for just €3.00 each. I was'nt even looking for mirrors but with these bargains out there, you can't go wrong.

Living Room Tip: Overhead the fireplace is a good place to start with Mirrors
Bedroom Tip: Put Mirror on the wall opposite the window or try decorating your wardrobe with panals of small mirrors.

Lighting - Use all the natural light that you can. Do not hide the double doors with curtains or shutters. Light up the corners of the rooms using lamps, one large standing lamp can be very effective for creating the impression of extra living room space.Use lamp shades that divert light upwards, this created the impression of space and lenght.

Colour - I suppose you were told a million times to keep things neutral. Yes, neutral is very effective in creating space but also attracting the eye to vertical stripes of colour can create the illusion of depth and horizontal colours of stripes can create the illusion of greated width in a room.

It is important not to overload with colour. Pick three colours and try to stick to them.

Blending wall and furniture colours is a very effective way of creating space and if you keep these colours neutral you can always use vibrant patterns for your accessories, i.e. lamps, shades, cusions, clocks, frames etc.

Storage - Under the Bed storage is great for de-cluttering and creating space in a bedroom. Also built in cabinets and small drawers are great for storing letters, bills, magazines and other messy features.

Cover Window edges - This is a great tip that I actually read somewhere before. You can create the illusion of space by using more wall space to hang your curtains. By ensuring the whole window is seen you create more natural light and also because curtains normally hang over part of the window you make this wall seem bigger. Long curtains are a great feature in a living room.

Thats all for now but I am sure I will have a few more tips soon.
